Okay, okay, breathe --
I passed my comprehensive exams!!!
Yay!
(I was so scared this morning -- thanks, B for your faith ^_^)
Now I just have to worry about my thesis -- (which I haven't touched since last October - erg!)
* * *
This is me, the kamikaze koala --
It started last Saturday, J, M and I were on our way to dinner (Katre along Tomas Morato) and we were discussing the aura and energy of the people in the store.
I'd like to think I present a stern image (all walled-up, aloof and detached) -- after I told M this, he goes "Sweetie, what you are is a kamikaze koala" --
I have a mean and vicious side -- it's just that I've never been in a situation (not that I'm asking for one) that would have me be mean and vicious.
But I like the idea of being a kamikaze koala -- raar! ^_^ -- thanks, M! ^_^
If I could tell the world just one thing, it would be that we're all ok
And not to worry because worry is wasteful and useless in times like these
I will not be made useless, I won't be idle with despair
I will gather myself around my faith for light does the darkness most fear

To fall in love is to create a religion with a fallible god.
- Jorge Luis Borges
... I found this quote in the Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism
* * *
...love is a story
- Dr. Robert Sternberg
... was reading P and R's psych book (they're BS Psych sophomores -- it was an interesting read. I'll ask to borrow and photocopy some parts next time I see them)

"Do you have a feeling that I am rushing into things?" --
When J asked me this question last night, I didn't know what to say because I wasn't sure what he meant by it.
(Amazing how much clarity sleep gives me --)
It is 6 in the morning and I think I know what he means by it because I realized that I am rushing into things also --
I've been filling my days with all these activities. I'm constantly looking for something to do. I can never seem to catch my thoughts or to pause and reflect. And, while I can say that I'm just restless and antsy and that this will pass the minute I find out the results of my comprehensive exam (yes, my life revolves around a letter grade which two anonymous people will give me =P), there's that part of my brain that's telling me this isn't entirely the case.
And I wonder what it is exactly that I'm trying to run away from.
What is it that I am trying to avoid?
What is it that I am trying not to deal with?
I asked J if he knew why he's rushing -- and maybe I did so because I want to find my reasons for doing so.
I can't remember what he said and it doesn't really matter because those aren't my reasons.
~sigh~

Reflections on the canon --
"Mel and I were a badly dubbed, out-of-sync kung fu movie, with Mel as the action and me lagging behind as the dialogue. I thought I'd never catch her up. But which is more important: us reaching the same conclusions, or us reaching the same conclusions at the same time?" - Mike Gayle, Mr. Commitment
One of my favorite tracks in the Royal Tenenbaum's OST is Mothersbaugh's Canon -- I like how quiet it sounds. (Strange way to describe it, but I know very little of music -- sorry ^_^)
(I also like Pachelbel's Canon ^_^)
I like the idea that it is one melody played over and over, starting at different times to create this piece of music called a canon. (In another website, the canon is described as an echo -- ^_^)
I'd like to think of my life as one of the songs in that cosmic canon. I began when I begin. Though I find mself wanting to catch up with those who are ahead of me, I realize that this is the pace I am meant to walk at. I need to concentrate on playing my own part well.
And, though I may not be able to see the big picture, I know that it is there.

These Days by Nico (The Royal Tenenbaums OST)
I've been out walking
I don't do too much talking
These days, these days.
These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
And all the times I had the chance to.
I've stopped my rambling,
I don't do too much gambling
These days, these days.
These days I seem to think about
How all the changes came about my ways
And I wonder if I'll see another highway.
I had a lover,
I don't think I'll risk another
These days, these days.
And if I seem to be afraid
To live the life that I have made in song
It's just that I've been losing so long.
La la la la la, la la.
I've stopped my dreaming,
I won't do too much scheming
These days, these days.
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten.
Please don't confront me with my failures,
I had not forgotten them.
The Fairest of the Seasons by Nico (The Royal Tenenbaums OST)
Now that it's time
Now that the hour hand has landed at the end
Now that it's real
Now that the dreams have given all they had to lend
I want to know do I stay or do I go
And maybe try another time
And do I really have a hand in my forgetting ?
Now that I've tried
Now that I've finally found that this is not the way,
Now that I turn
Now that I feel it's time to spend the night away
I want to know do I stay or do I go
And maybe finally split the rhyme
And do I really understand the undernetting ?
Yes and the morning has me
Looking in your eyes
And seeing mine warning me
To read the signs carefully.
Now that it's light
Now that the candle's falling smaller in my mind
Now that it's here
Now that I'm almost not so very far behind
I want to know do I stay or do I go
And maybe follow another sign
And do I really have a song that I can ride on ?
Now that I can
Now that it's easy, ever easy all around.
Now that I'm here
Now that I'm falling to the sunlights and a song
I want to know do I stay or do I go
And do I have to do just one
And can I choose again if I should lose the reason ?
Now that I smile,
Now that I'm laughing even deeper inside.
Now that I see,
Now that I finally found the one thing I denied
It's now I know do I stay or do I go
And it is finally I decide
That I'll be leaving
In the fairest of the seasons.
... what a great OST -- well worth it ^_^
... erm, the things in bold/highlight are the lines the I like ^_^

Listening to the Royal Tenenbaums OST (Thanks to A and D for getting it for me in HK ^_^)
* * *
Interesting -- (got this from a friend's friend's lj)
So, say you were meeting a new person--blind date, new friend, who knows. And you wanted them to have some idea of what kind of person you are, and who you are. But you can't actually tell them in so many words. Instead, you have to give them a box, with a dozen things in it for them to look at/read/listen to/taste/whatever. What would you put in the box?
... cheated -- this is more than 12 ^_^
1. notebooks and pens
2. a watch and eyeglasses
3. books: AS Byatt's Possession, the Faber and Faber WH Auden's Collected Poems, Tuesdays with Morrie
4. cds: RENT, Immortal Beloved OST, a cd with the songs Crash Into Me (DMB), Shimmer (Fuel), Taxi Ride (Tori Amos)
5. a bottle of The Body Shop's White Musk Bath and Shower Gel and Cetaphil
6. my UK journal and "happy thoughts" book
7. a pint of Coffee Crumble or Double Dutch
8. a bottle of Vitamin C and some bottles of orange juice
9. my cameras
10. can i stuff my sibs into this box? ^_^ (fine, a picture of them then)
11. a bottle of isopropyl alcohol (johnson's) -- never leave home without it ^_^
12. a copy of the e-mails between me and K
and this is fun -- try to make portraits of yourselves and your friends ^_^
* * *
Am working on my new PC -- the old one decided to develop bad sectors and died on me this weekend --
Had to burn files into cds and had a hard time deciding which files were important and which weren't --
I didn't want to waste cds on this so it boiled down to one folder -- where i keep all my works (academic and otherwise)
... and now, it's even more strange looking at this one cd with one folder -- that's three years of my life right there ^_^
* * *
A dropped by the store today and we had an interesting, albeit brief conversation about time -- it's interesting how we talk about it -- "make time", "kill time", "waste time" -- as though it were some sort of tangible that we had control over
but do we really? for the past few weeks, i've been talking about how time is moving by so quickly -- and, yet, for another friend it's crawling --
* * *
1036pm
Just got back from having dessert with C and J -- (wonderful people ^_^)
Tomorrow is C's birthday, so I considered this the pre-birthday party, which was sooo much fun! We had dessert at Goodies and Sweets (in Greenhills) and I had the turtle pie -- sinful! ^_^
It was nice to be able to sit down with them and have a long, decent conversation (we're all busy people and it's hard to get our skeds to mesh --)
I love my friends. ^_^

"Are you messenger or message?"
- A Wizard of Earthsea, Ursula K LeGuin
* * *
Currently listening to Joss Stone's The Soul Sessions --
* * *
There's a new store in Galleria called The Store With No Name -- cool, affordable stuff (clothes, btw ^_^).
The grad studies coordinator for English informed me that the results of my comprehensive exams have been forwarded to the Graduate School Services -- gads, tomorrow will either be a day of celebration or a day of sadness for me --
oh well, towel! ^_^
* * *
The universe feels right --
and I am waiting for the other shoe to drop (curse me and my suspicious nature! >_<)
maybe this time it won't?
~sigh~

"To light a candle is to cast a shadow..."
- A Wizard of Earthsea, Ursula K LeGuin
... thanks B for lending me the books ^_^
* * *
See me be spontaneous --
M texted earlier today that he wanted to watch Mr. 80% again. I really wanted to watch this because I was impressed with BlueRep's Footloose and wanted to see more of their productions.
We dragged J along and had a grand time -- it was soooo funny! ^_^
Since M was bringing me, he decided to use the opportunity to bring me and J to Katre (which he has been raving about for the longest time) -- we had dinner there after the play. The place was great and the food was amazing! The service was excellent, too ^_^
* * *
Got a copy of Joss Stone's The Soul Sessions -- my golly! ganda! ^_^ (I listened to it twice in a row -- what a voice!)

^_^ --
My cousin left for Canada today (her flight got moved from next week) -- since it was super-short notice, I decided to give her my copy of Flipped (there was another copy in National Bookstore Katipunan when I got the book last Wednesday) so she would have something to read during the flight (trust me, those in-flight magazines can only entertain you for so long ^_^)
I went back to Natio this morning to get the other copy but it was gone. ~sigh~
So I got Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl --
"She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to a like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew."
... I wish I could be more like Stargirl ^_^
Another good read ^_^ (but this book-a-day habit is getting expensive -- erg!)
* * *
Got a copy of my grad school transcripts this morning --
I had put off getting a copy for the longest time because I didn't want to know my grades for the last few classes I was taking. I was aware that I wasn't doing my best for these classes (and I felt sad about it because I really loved and admired the teachers who taught them).
Kaya I was relieved to see that I got really good grades for them, especially with Chapter 1 of my thesis. I knew this one sucked talaga -- I was writing for the sake of wanting to get it over and done with. I was prepared to get a "B" for this class.
And then he gave me an "A-" (I still maintain my average -- yay! ^_^) -- this pleases me to no end. I was beginning to think I wasn't worthy to be an EngLit grad student (yes, yes I succumbed to my insecurity and self-pity)
~whew!~

Kaya I was relieved to see that I got really good grades for them, especially with Chapter 1 of my thesis. I knew this one sucked talaga -- I was writing for the sake of wanting to get it over and done with. I was prepared to get a "B" for this class.
And then he gave me an "A-" (I still maintain my average -- yay! ^_^) -- this pleases me to no end. I was beginning to think I wasn't worthy to be an EngLit grad student (yes, yes I succumbed to my insecurity and self-pity)
~whew!~

I finished reading a really great book today -- (Thanks, M for introducing me to this author ^_^)
Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen --
"... like the world is moving all around you, all beneath you, all inside you, and you're floating. Floating in midair. And the only thing keeping you from drifting away is the other person's eyes. They're connected to yours by some invisible physical force, and they hold you fast while the rest of the world swirls and twirls and falls completely away."
and
"Some of us get dipped in flat, some in satin, some in gloss ... but every once in a while you find someone who's iridiscent, and when you do, nothing will ever compare."
... very light and very sweet story ^_^
* * *
I love the people in my life -- I learn so much from each one. My world is a playground and I have fun every day ^_^ (and, on those days that I don't -- the company is always excellent)
Thank you all. ^_^
* * *
I love orange juice --
The weather has been very crazy -- it's too hot!
I'm feeling a tickle in my throat (don't tell me I'm going to get sick =P)
... these sentences make very little sense -- sorry ^_^
* * *
Tempus fugit!
By this time, I would be making plans re: where am going for the Holy Week --
This year, I'm strangely compelled to stay put -- maybe just take a quick trip to the beach (be near the water) or something.
I wonder where my wanderlust went -- (now say this three times fast ^_^)

Still reading Mike Gayle's Mr. Commitment --
Some interesting excerpts:
"It was Mel's way when she was unhappy to clean -- to make sense of her environment by completing tasks that were completable. The room seemed to echo her thoughts: 'If only life were cleanable. If only it was a question of time and effort before life took on some semblance of peace and order.'"
<--- this is how i feel when the world gets to me -- I have this urge to sort and fix things =P
and
"Can't you see what I'm saying? All these couples are going round trying desperately to improve everything in their lives because they want to be perfect. They want to have a perfect house, go to perfect restaurants and have the perfect relationship. But nothing's perfect, so they'll never be happy because they're not focusing on what they've got, only on what comes next. I love you, Mel. We'll be all right. We will. I know we're not perfect but we're so much better together than the alternative."
<--- wow. (In case you're wondering, it's the guy saying this)
* * *
Meet my inner bitch --
It started out really pleasant in the store today. (Some would consider quiet as bad for business, but I don't mind it at all -- customers came, we attended to them and left)
And then this --
People I didn't know or recognize decided to be "comfortable" in the store -- scattering their bags here and there and taking up very important bench space. This went on for an hour or so --
I don't claim to know all the customers, but I'd like to think I'm familiar with the faces of a number of them. (And you get the sense that these people had absolutely no business being there -- read: not interested in comics or VtES -- and that they were there because they had nothing better to do.)
We tried to tolerate the situation -- but found that we couldn't. At one point, my sister had to tell the guy to stop drumming (WTF, di ba?) and there was the foot stomping and some other annoying things.
Basta, it was annoying.
When they started to get really loud, (and there are only 6 of you in the store) I went over to them and told them to keep their voices down. I didn't even bother to be polite or to take out the irritation from my voice. I really just let it go.
I went back to where I usually sit at the far side of the store and continued to read -- G had to ask me if I was okay. (I was ^_^)
I'm normally passive-aggressive about these things -- but I really couldn't tolerate them disturbing my peace.
~sigh~
to clarify: i don't mind people hanging out in the store -- i like it that they do. (gives me a chance to catch up with them na rin)
* * *
Ah, on a happy note --
Met a new person today -- B is M's friend and a fellow debater. (i like that i was immediately at ease with her --)
It turns out, she also designs clothes -- I've always been intrigued by this and have been meaning to find a young designer to make clothes for me. We talked about fabric and design and what she's done na -- and I told her that, when I get money, I'll have her make me a dress.
She looked at me and said, "normally, i would charge for this. but, since you're nice --"
It _is_ a lovely dress and I will have her make it for me -- soon. ^_^
* * *
This is my new desktop wallpaper --
E drew this last Monday. I was in an exceptionally good mood and my spirits were high. (M said my aura that day was very bright ^_^)
... and I love my new shoes. ^_^
Yes, I am happy and fairly content with the way my life is going. ^_^

For those interested:
UST Writers Workshop will be held in Baguio on April 25 to May 1
Deadline for submission of entries is this March 15. (at least 5 poems, or two short stories or two one-act plays)
For more info, call 7313103 loc. 8281

Had a really good conversation with J kanina -- it's always interesting to know his thoughts because I've always wondered whether we think the same (we're sort of kambal = born same day, same year, etc. -- he, however, does not have a self-flagellating side =P)
Over really horrible french fries and over-mayoed burgers, we talked about life, movies, etc. etc. (Put my mind at ease about a lot of things ^_^ -- thanks J)
* * *
Reading Mike Gayle's Mr. Commitment -- it's pretty good. He does sound a bit like Nick Hornby.
(there are excerpts of this available in amazon.com ^_^)

re: Oscars --
didn't get to watch it because I had to go to work -- but had friends giving me updates every so often (thanks, M)
Was disappointed that Bill Murray and Sofia Coppola didn't win for Lost in Translation (although that Best Screenplay award is still something -- I was amazed with her work in Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation was just as wonderful -- )
Am happy that Finding Nemo won ^_^
Will try to watch the rerun tonight

currently listening to: Green Day's Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) and When I Come Around
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road.
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go.
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why.
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time.
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.
So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind.
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time.
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial.
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while.
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

Oldies but goodies --
Was in Astroplus, Podium with my bro yesterday looking for new vcds to watch. Walked past the shelf for old movies and remembered the summer we spent just watching all the old stuff -- (this is where I started watching and liking James Stewart and Auprey Hepburn movies)

2. Barefoot in the Park (Robert Redford and Jane Fonda)
3. High Society (Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra) and The Philadelphia Story (Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart) -- same story, one is a musical and the other, well ... isn't ^_^
4. Hello Dolly! (Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau) -- yes, yes I like Barbra Streisand =P
5. The Way We Were (Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford) -- now this one just makes you cry and cry and cry -- erg!
6. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid -- um ... Paul Newman AND Robert Redford in the same movie = 'nuff said ^_^
7. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof -- Tennessee Williams talaga and his catharsis =P

How I Spent Leap Year Day:
Bought Mike Gayle's other book, Mr. Commitment at Powerbooks, met up with J for lunch (was with bro) -- we decided to watch Something's Gotta Give, whcih I thoroughly enjoyed -- Keanu Reeves as a doctor ^^).
I liked the story -- Diane Keaton was amazing! (I hope I grow old as well as she did.)
... isn't it amazing how we can condense 5 hours of my life into 4 lines of text? ^_^
* * *
And so endeth hectic week --
Didn't realize how tired I was until I fell asleep at 730 last night.
I went to check for the results of the compre, but it seems they haven't even checked the papers -- oh well, more time to worry about it =P

Just got back from a dinner with college friends --
one of our friends is getting married this March (the first in our group) and we are now making plans to attend his wedding in Cebu --
I like how our group can just sit down, despite not having seen each other in over 2 years, and comfortably have dinner and catch up on each other's lives. We picked up where we left off, 2 years ago and just talked and talked and talked.
We had dinner in Burgoo and then off for drinks at Elbow Room (Podium) --
(Never realized how much I missed being with this group --)
* * *
I'm currently reading Mike Gayle's My Legendary Girlfriend --
"I love you so much that when I think about how I feel about you my brain can't begin to comprehend it. It's exactly like infinity. I don't understand it, but those are the limitations of my love."
... P and C of Jawbreaker gave me their copy of this book (thank you!), but it's available at Powerbooks! (it is an excellent read -- D said it reminded him of Nick Hornby)

Relief!
Been having internet problems for the past two days --
realized how attached I am to my daily routine of checking mail and reading blog entries --
Finally got access this morning -- yay!
* * *
Busy, busy --
Just came back from a surprise birthday party for A.
Meeting up with F and C tomorrow to watch Electile Dysfunction.
Having dinner with college friends on Friday
Tourney at the store on Saturday
... still thinking about what to do on Sunday -- it's the 29th, a day that only comes once every four years ^_^
* * *
Had coffee with G last Tuesday -- it was raining, but we didn't seem to care. We still mucked through Katipunan just to get our caffeine fix.
Had a very good conversation with her -- gained a lot of insights. ^_^
Thanks, G.

According to this test, my IQ is 131 and that my Intellectual Type is Word Warrior.
This means you have exceptional verbal skills. You can easily make sense of complex issues and take an unusually creative approach to solving problems. Your strengths also make you a visionary. Even without trying you're able to come up with lots of new and creative ideas.

What I learned from watching Blues Clues:
Purple and Violet are two different colors. Purple is the product of mixing Blue and Red together and Violet is a Purplish Blue.
Kids are expected to know what Chartreuse is (a mix of yellow and some other color) and Vermillion (a type of Orange).
^_^
* * *
Just finished watching Il Mare. ~sigh~
Favorite lines:
"We despair not because love goes away, but because it goes on."
"There are three things we can never hide: coughing, poverty and love. The more we try to hide it, the more that people will notice."
I still have a backlog of movies to watch --
- Warriors of Heaven and Earth
- Lover's Concerto (actor from My Sassy Girl with actress from The Classic)
- Battle Royale II
etc. etc.

New happy thought:
B burned me a compilation of songs in acapella. Been listening to it the entire weekend. (Makes me smile.) Had people at the store listen to it last Saturday and everyone now wants a copy. ^_^

Can't believe February is ending -- how time flies.

^_^

Just finished watching Il Mare. ~sigh~
Favorite lines:
"We despair not because love goes away, but because it goes on."
"There are three things we can never hide: coughing, poverty and love. The more we try to hide it, the more that people will notice."
I still have a backlog of movies to watch --
- Warriors of Heaven and Earth
- Lover's Concerto (actor from My Sassy Girl with actress from The Classic)
- Battle Royale II
etc. etc.

Attended the viewing of C's documentary. Dragged J along. I thought it was amazing -- (this was the first time I got to see C's work)
I don't think I could be a documentary film maker -- I don't think I could ever maintain that objective distance. (We were probably 10 minutes into the documentary and I was on the verge of crying -- when I told J about this on our way back to the store, he goes "Yes, I noticed.")
Yes, yes -- mababaw ang luha ko -- hell, I cried through Battle Royale (so tragic) and through Mickey's Christmas Carol, etc. etc.

There's a comet that's going to pass by Venus tonight --
Some people will be going to the Manila Observatory to try to look for it ^_^
* * *
And check this out -- Fuyu no Hi (A Winter's Day) is an animation project by 35 animators based on a 2-line couplet by Basho. ^_^
I want to see this! Curious! ^_^

from one of my journals:
...this was sent to me via e-mail
When you come to the edge of all the light you know and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing one of two things will happen: there will be something solid to stand on or you will be taught to fly.
my faith lies in knowing that there will be people who will be there to catch me when i fall
-ca November 1999
... I wonder what happened between 1999 and 2003 that made me question this. (Notice I didn't include 2004 -- I think I'm slowly regaining my faith in the world. A slow, tedious and challenging process =P)
* * *
And I found a good book to read -- G had given me a lovely book on Beauty (collection of poems and essays on the topic) for my birthday. ^_^

Sonnet XVII by Pablo Neruda
I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.
I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way
than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.
M dropped by the store today and had two Neruda compilations. He pointed me to this poem -- (hehehe, left me breathless -- ganda!)
and this one:
Sonnet LXXXI
And now you're mine. Rest with your dream in my dream.
Love and pain and work should all sleep, now.
The night turns on its invisible wheels,
and you are pure beside me as a sleeping amber.
No one else, Love, will sleep in my dreams. You will go,
we will go together, over the waters of time.
No one else will travel through the shadows with me,
only you, evergreen, ever sun, ever moon.
Your hands have already opened their delicate fists
and let their soft drifting signs drop away; your eyes closed like two gray
wings, and I move
after, following the folding water you carry, that carries
me away. The night, the world, the wind spin out their destiny.
Without you, I am your dream, only that, and that is all.
and I want someone to read this to me (preferably in Spanish):
Sonnet XI
I crave your mouth, your voice, your hair.
Silent and starving, I prowl through the streets.
Bread does not nourish me, dawn disrupts me, all day
I hunt for the liquid measure of your steps.
I hunger for your sleek laugh,
your hands the color of a savage harvest,
hunger for the pale stones of your fingernails,
I want to eat your skin like a whole almond.
I want to eat the sunbeam flaring in your lovely body,
the sovereign nose of your arrogant face,
I want to eat the fleeting shade of your lashes,
and I pace around hungry, sniffing the twilight,
hunting for you, for your hot heart,
like a puma in the barrens of Quitratue.

am in a reading rut right now -- ~sigh~ started and stopped so many books in the past two days. Thank goodness I managed to finish reading Philip Dick's Minority Report (just Minority Report)
M pointed me to a murder mystery book and I started reading it, but I had to stop -- I don't think it's its time to be read.
i. need. a. book. to. read. now. >_<

had orange juice with E in Starbucks. It is good to just sit down and be -- the words and thoughts just flow unguarded (and laughter flows freely as well) -- and you walk away feeling strangely more at ease with the world.
i asked him if he thought i was narcissistic and self-indulgent. no daw to the first but he thinks i'm an odd mix of self-indulgent and self-flagellating. i think he's right about that. there are days when i feel the need to either apologize for or explain my existence -- i don't know why, but i do -- sometimes.
It is during these days that you will see me agonize over my life and where it is going -- major stress. =P
During those other days, when I've probably argued it out in my head (that I am here and that there is a reason for my existence), you'll see me just act out of impulse and be utterly crazy (a rare occasion).
I'd like a middle ground, please. (with a side order of fries)

Tomorrow is Friday already -- how time flies.
And I'm glad they've decided to show Lost in Translation in the theaters. A must, must-watch! ^_^

Had lunch at that new Persian place (building behind Shakey's) -- loved the lamb ^_^ (and the company was excellent).
For the adventurous, they actually serve brain (and the people I had lunch with ordered it and, apparently, it's not bad -- I'm a wimp when it comes to these things. ^_^;;)
And they have this bell thingie that you can use to call your waiter -- didn't feel comfortable using it. =P
* * *
Spontaneous --
Accompanied D to Megamall to check out computers. We are a bad combination because we like going to all the stores we like to look at everything and we're impulsive buyers (is this a Capricorn trait?) -- but it was fun. Discovered that you get free photographs taken of yourself if you purchase from Gift Gate -- hahahaha, this was funny. (The background was the Hello Kitty gang in Wizard of Oz costumes)
Also hunted for the rare and elusive Meiji jellybeans (for those who haven't tried this -- go and get some from Watson's. I have several friends who are currently "addicted" ^_^) This sells out quickly daw. We went to several Watson's outlets in Megamall and were able to find it in the big Watson's (basement) -- but we were willing to walk to Podium in case we didn't find it there. (I didn't mind walking -- I was wearing my comfy new shoes ^_^)

A question I was asked:
How uncomplicated do you think you are?
(hehehe, it is very complicated to be this uncomplicated ^_^)

More Szymborska goodness--
(from www.poetryhunter.com)
Some Like Poetry
Some -
thus not all. Not even the majority of all but the minority.
Not counting schools, where one has to,
and the poets themselves,
there might be two people per thousand.
Like -
but one also likes chicken soup with noodles,
one likes compliments and the color blue,
one likes an old scarf,
one likes having the upper hand,
one likes stroking a dog.
Poetry -
but what is poetry.
Many shaky answers
have been given to this question.
But I don't know and don't know and hold on to it
like to a sustaining railing.
Translated by Regina Grol

Under One Small Star
My apologies to chance for calling it necessity.
My apologies to necessity if I'm mistaken, after all.
Please, don't be angry, happiness, that I take you as my due.
May my dead be patient with the way my memories fade.
My apologies to time for all the world I overlook each second.
My apologies to past loves for thinking that the latest is the first.
Forgive me, distant wars, for bringing flowers home.
Forgive me, open wounds, for pricking my finger.
I apologize for my record of minuets to those who cry from the depths.
I apologize to those who wait in railway stations for being asleep today at five a.m.
Pardon me, hounded hope, for laughing from time to time.
Pardon me, deserts, that I don't rush to you bearing a spoonful of water.
And you, falcon, unchanging year after year, always in the same cage,
your gaze always fixed on the same point in space,
forgive me, even if it turns out you were stuffed.
My apologies to the felled tree for the table's four legs.
My apologies to great questions for small answers.
Truth, please don't pay me much attention.
Dignity, please be magnanimous.
Bear with me, O mystery of existence, as I pluck the occasional thread from your train.
Soul, don't take offense that I've only got you now and then.
My apologies to everything that I can't be everywhere at once.
My apologies to everyone that I can't be each woman and each man.
I know I won't be justified as long as I live,
since I myself stand in my own way.
Don't bear me ill will, speech, that I borrow weighty words,
then labor heavily so that they may seem light.

First Love
They say
the first love is the most important.
That's very romantic
but it's not the case with me.
There was something between us yet there wasn't.
It transpired and expired.
My hands don't tremble,
when I stumble upon small mementos
or a stack of letters wrapped in twine
—not even a ribbon.
Our only meeting after all these years
is a conversation between two chairs
at a cold table.
Other loves
still breathe deeply within me.
This one lacks the breath to sigh.
But still, just the way it is,
it can do what the rest are not yet able to do:
unremembered
not even dreamt of
it accustoms me to death.
- (translated by Joanna Trzeciak )

My first experience of Szymborska was in college -- she was the topic of a friend's senior thesis. He made me read One Small Star and it didn't really affect me as much back then as it does now.

With compre out of the way, I can now focus on living a life --
- Having coffee with G on Wednesday to catch up.
- Am building a new deck for VtES.
- I bought new shoes that I can walk faster in ^_^ (ah, they are a lovely and perfect pair of shoes -am glad I found them).
- Bought book 4 of the Princess Diaries series (would've gotten more, but I brought the wrong wallet and I didn't have my discount card) and a friend is lending me the Earthsea series.
There is also the videoke get-together with sina E.
And so many birthdays in the next three weeks! ^_^

So compre is over --
I was sooo tired even before the exam started -- couldn't sleep! (Videoke marathon was happening somewhere in the building, plus I kept waking up to check if it was time to wake up =P)
I was right about the questions for this exam (trace the development of fiction, trace the development of poetry) -- the third question caught me by surprise -- it was a question on Shakespeare. (This comforted me because I love Shakespeare -- hell, spent nearly a month being immersed in his works)
Trip to the spa was amazing! Good thing my friend made reservations two weeks before -- they were booked! (Guess a lot of people thought that was a good way to spend Valentine's Day) Bumped into college friends who were also there for treatments -- realized that it's been 10 years since I was a freshman at AdMU (gads, am old). F and I are planning to meet up with our old freshman block in June (to re-live our Orsem -- hahaha)
* * *
Going to Mei-Ah in a bit -- hoping to find a copy of Takeshi Kaneshiro's Turn Right Turn Left(ohpleaseohpleaseohplease) and will meet up with sibs at Powerplant (yay! I get to buy the rest of the Princess Diaries series)
* * *
Just got back and I'm in the middle of watching Takeshi Kaneshiro in Turn Right, Turn Left -- this poem by Wislawa Szymborska is featured in the movie and I thought I'd share it here --
Love at First Sight
by Wislawa Szymborska
Both are convinced
that a sudden surge of emotion bound them together.
Beautiful is such a certainty,
but uncertainty is more beautiful.
Because they didn't know each other earlier, they suppose that
nothing was happening between them.
What of the streets, stairways and corridors
where they could have passed each other long ago?
I'd like to ask them
whether they remember--perhaps in a revolving door
ever being face to face?
an "excuse me" in a crowd
or a voice "wrong number" in the receiver.
But I know their answer:
no, they don't remember.
They'd be greatly astonished
to learn that for a long time
chance had been playing with them.
Not yet wholly ready
to transform into fate for them
it approached them, then backed off,
stood in their way
and, suppressing a giggle,
jumped to the side.
There were signs, signals:
but what of it if they were illegible.
Perhaps three years ago,
or last Tuesday
did a certain leaflet fly
from shoulder to shoulder?
There was something lost and picked up.
Who knows but what it was a ball
in the bushes of childhood.
There were doorknobs and bells
on which earlier touch piled on touch.
Bags beside each other in the luggage room.
Perhaps they had the same dream on a certain night,
suddenly erased after waking.
Every beginning
is but a continuation,
and the book of events
is never more than half open.
- (translated by Walter Whipple)

From Day's of Being Wild:
Leslie Cheung's character (LC): Look at my watch.
Maggie Cheung's character (MC): But why?
LC: For one minute?
A minute passes.
MC: Now. Speak up.
LC: What day's today?
MC: Sixteenth.
LC: Sixteenth. April the sixteenth. The one minute before 3pm on April the sixteenth, 1960, you're together with me. Because of you, I'll remember that one minute. From now on, we we were friends for one minute. This is a fact you can't change*. It's accomplished.
... I *heart* Wong Kar-Wai ^_^
*The subtitle said "retreat", but I could understand the Chinese and it meant "change".

Studio 23 is showing the last season of Buffy (every Monday at 8pm).
* * *
Watched Lost in Translation last night -- wow! (Bill Murray and Scarlet Johanssen were amazing!)
* * *
Last part of compre is this Saturday. I'm not sure if I'm ready for this one -- I don't know if I'm studying enough for it. (I'm really just going through the motions of reading, taking notes, etc. etc. -- but I don't know if I've actually comprehended (?) anything. Oh well --

And since Saturday is February 14:
Favorite love-love, feel-good movies
1. My Sassy Girl and Who Are You?
2. Breakfast at Tiffany's (Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard)
3. Come Live with Me (James Stewart and Hedy Lamarr) and Shop Around the Corner (James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan)
4. Before Sunrise (Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy)
5. Bridget Jones's Diary (Colin Firth and Renee Zellweger) and If Lucy Fell (Sarah Jessica Parker and Eric Schaeffer)

Currently listening to Lea Salonga singing "Something More" from Something More: Songs for Skeptics (JesCom)
Where are You, You whom I seek to know?
Are You the One I'm looking for?
Show Your face.
Why don't You break Your silence now?
Tame the stormy seas within me.
Name these shadows trapped inside me.
Claim this lost and frightened child you see in me.
* * *
I really enjoy my conversations with F. She has a way of looking at things and asking the right questions. And she lets me talk and I know that she's listening (and this is something because we both have really short attention spans ^_^) -- it is sooooo wonderful! And I'm glad we took our compre at the same time -- it would have been more nerve-wracking if she weren't there.
At lunch, after our compre, she shared the lyrics of Something More with me and I remembered her saying these lines and I knew I needed to hear the song.
* * *
Just came from Footloose, staged by Blue Repertory--
Mama says
Don't use a toaster while standing in the shower
Now who an argue with that?
Mama says
Don't hold your breath for longer than an hour
The woman knows where it's at!
...
Mama says
Don't drink hot coffee lying down in bed
Don't even give it a thought
...
Mama says
Willard
Never eat anything bigger than your head
Is she a whiz or what?
... I like Williard's mama ^_^
And this one --
I'm tired of feeling nothing but numb
Maybe the time has come
To finally let the world in
But how do I begin?
... "wow!", di ba?
Too bad today was the last show, would have wanted to drag more people to watch it. It was soooooo much fun! Here's hoping they restage it. ^_^
What made it even more fun was watching it with theater friends -- Mahar, Nikka, Paul and Phil. (Too bad the others didn't go --) I haven't seen these people in a bit (Phil, especially) but it was all very comfortable and pleasant. I love this bunch -- wish we could meet up and watch more plays and musicals more often...

One down, one to go--
Whew! That was a weird comprehensive exam -- did not expect it at all. Can you say "reductio ad absurdum"? Because that's what it felt like -- I had read up on this for six effing months and have taken down enough notes to fill 12 notebooks (well, those filler notebooks) -- and it came down to two questions.
I don't know if I answered them well enough and I don't know how those questions are going to show that I've "mastered" English Literature ... ~sigh~ I am glad that's over and I just have next weekend to worry about.
* * *
Attended first Friday mass last night in AdMU. They turned on the lights around Parade Loop and it was beautiful! And then I had my moment of grace:
I was sitting there, feeling slightly sorry for myself because I was alone (most people were there with their friends, families or significant others) -- and then ACMG sang this:
Huwag kang mangamba, 'di ka nag-iisa
Sasamahan kita, saan man magpunta
Ika'y mahalaga sa 'King mga mata
Minamahal kita, minamahal kita
-- It was strangely comforting to be reminded of this. Talk about answers! (I still find solace in religion ^_^)
And then I had a nice, quiet walk back to my brother's condo in Burgundy -- it is nice to give in to the silence and just meditate. I stood there, in the field facing Katipunan Avenue and looked up at the sky (though my bro insists it's pollution, I like the colors of the sky) and then across the field to the street (erg, because of the new traffic system) -- and I marvelled at the vastness of this world (and wondered where my place was in it ^_^)
* * *
Am reading Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries (M was reading the series and it intrigued me, so I got copies of the first two books. Now I want to get the next four. Help. ^_^)

Oh yeah, I like my horoscope today -- (yahoo.com)
If you're into writing, dear Capricorn, this is the perfect day to sit down at the computer and churn out the words - even if it's only a letter to your mother. Your imagination is especially vivid, your expression clear and understandable, and your vocabulary skills especially acute. If this is a thesis or article, you may spend hours on it - but don't worry. It'll be that much better for it.
* * *
Pedestrians displaced/endangered --
It boggles the mind just how much havoc one man can wreak on Katipunan in a day: the MMDA has implemented a new traffic system for Katipunan Avenue and this has resulted in major inconvenience for poor pedestrians like me ~sigh~
They've closed off the intersection of Gate 3 (and I've heard they've done the same in Miriam). They've turned off the traffic lights, which means you will see cars speeding through Katipunan -- hay naku!
Pedestrians, who were having a hard enough time crossing to Gate 3 before this new system now have to run for their lives in order to get across -- or wait for those traffic officers to lead them across. The other option is to walk all the way to Starbucks so that one can cross safely through the overpass -- effing inconvenient!
Tuesday, the first day of its full implementation (Monday doesn't count -- AdMU and Miriam didn't have classes), there were so many reported cases of minor mishaps because of this new system. Erg--
I really don't see the point of it -- it has just made things more difficult and more dangerous. A friend yesterday had to take a trike (and pay PhP9) just to cross Katipunan. When I was getting ready to go to AdMU, he told me to do the same to save myself the trouble -- but I didn't even bother: if these cars can't even respect pedestrians, why would they stop for a trike? So I decided to brave the new system and crossed -- good thing there was a tanod nearby who helped me. As we were walking, we talked about the new system and he seemed as frustrated about it as I was -- the best they could do was turn on the traffic lights again (told me this was happening today, but it hasn't yet!)
Are they waiting for someone to die before they do something about this? In today's Inquirer, there was an article there regarding Katipunan Avenue and how some people actually studied the possibility of making U-turn slots there -- with Math and stuff, they've shown that it isn't practical putting these U-Turn slots in Katipunan -- something about narrow medians and turning slow = cause traffic. These people studied this for 6 months!
Oh, and they've uprooted the trees and destroyed some of the islands along Corinthians going to White Plains -- what the hell for? Didn't that area have problems with drag racing in the past? And now they're taking away the last semblance of traffic (by this I mean the flow of cars) control in that area --
Damn this country talaga ~sigh~ (I still love it, but it leaves me frustrated and disappointed talaga --)
An apt quote:
Cogsworth: If it's not Baroque, don't fix it.
- Disney's Beauty and the Beast
* * *
Overheard at the snack counter while getting drinks (before watching Last Samurai)
Girl: Paano ba natin bibilangin ang tubig?
... somehow, this question pleases me ^_^

Compre countdown --
Erm -- it's on Saturday. Have tomorrow left for this -- my fate lies in the hands of two randomly picked readers. Oh well, towel! ^_^
On the plus side -- one more week and I can stop thinking about this and proceed with all the plans I made for post-February 14. Oh joy, oh jubilation! ^_^
First thing is a trip to Mei-Ah for Asian movies fix ^_^ -- rewatched My Sassy Girl two nights ago -- love this movie!
I really have to fix up this year's datebook -- erg, my bro didn't get one from HP so I had to get one and I don't like it as much. Have to grow to like it first. (yes, i am OC about my planners =P)

Curiouser and curiouser --
For Americans:
"Intimate space is about 18 inches away from our heads... personal space is two to four feet all around us... social space expands to about four to eight feet away and public space is all areas beyond." p. 111
This German scientist studied women's flirting behavior and this is what nearly all women do when they flirt:
"1. Smile
2. Lift their eyebrows in a fast, jerky motion.
3. Open their eyes wide (a sign of sympathetic system arousal which means that the "Hey, pay attention! part of our nervous system has kicked into gear.)
4. Lower their eyelids.
5. Tilt their heads down and to the side (a universal sign of submission in the animal kingdom).
6. Look away." p. 153

A friend gave me a really cool belated birthday present -- it's one of those Kodak disposable cameras with a flash -- I haven't opened it yet, but it's in my bag and I take it anywhere. I don't know why, but I really like having it with me ^_^
And E also gave me my birthday present -- it's a movie magazine which features Hero, one of my favorite movies -- (Tony Leung Chiu Wai! ^_^) Ty, E! ^_^
Had a really great day -- started with a walk to Starbucks with G (always fun to talk to) and then the usual group of VtES players ^_^ R! was at the store and he shared his thoughts on the Oscar nominees for this year -- I am a bit disappointed that Last Samurai didn't get as many nominations --
Did something spontaneous -- went with friends to Greenhills after work where we checked for erm... stuff ~tee hee~ ^_^
Tomorrow is book-buying day -- I want to get a copy of the book that Last Samurai was based on... not sure what the title is, though. Erg.
I'm also loving my new CD, Songs from 31 Songs -- it isn't music meant to be played in a public space, though (I can't appreciate it when I'm in the store --)
J lent me his copy of Pink Champagne and that's going to be Monday morning music (alliterated, yay!)
Oh, the store turns 2 tomorrow (not that we're open) -- we aren't doing anything fancy this year, though. Methinks we will celebrate quietly ^_^
And for fellow female Capricorns, a curious thing -- our horoscope for today, January 31:
Today you will have a golden opportunity to tell someone just how much you care about them. If you have not done this for some time, then it may be good to make some kind of grand gesture, and either take them on an adventure, or buy them a gift that will encourage them to explore the potential of your wonderful partnership.
... okay-- I don't have anyone in particular to say something to, so:
Dear world,
I'm beginning to care about you again. Let's not screw it up for each other, k? ^_^

Crisis over-- (January 30)
I actually had another entry all written out -- when I read it, I felt it was too depressing so I deleted it. (There is enough doom and gloom in this world as it is) =P
I've managed to deal with the situation and now it is time for me to pick up the pieces (which is going well ^_^)
I really can't dwell on this too much because there are so many other things that are happening in my life -- (compre, compre, compre) and I can't really afford to give in to the negative vibe ...
... and there is nothing like the comfort of friends to get you through a difficult time (thank you ^_^)
In hindsight:
I guess it was time for me to experience something that jarred me back to existence -- I had somewhat taken my life for granted and was going on automatic pilot.
* * *
Hehehe -- quote from Virginia Woolf:
I seemed to her such nonsense -- inventing differences, when people, heaven knows, were different enough without that. -To the Lighthouse
Every Wednesday of February, a presidentiable is will be in Ateneo to participate in a forum. I think I would like to hear what Ping Lacson and FPJ have to say -- not that I'm voting. =P
And this amuses me: Came from the lib yesterday and bumped into one of our store's customers -- fun lang when they do a double-take and you see surprise and confusion on their faces. Lol! ^_^
* * *
I really like Cheesecake etc.'s Chocolate True Confection (or is it confession) -- it's this gooey, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate cake. (I don't know what it's doing in a cheesecake place, but I'm glad it is there -- yum!) And one of our VtES players makes amazing, amazing cheesecake brownies -- will have him make some and will bring it to the store one of these days. ^_^
And I finally got a copy of Songs from 31 Songs (which compiles 18 of the 31 songs Nick Hornby writes about) My favorite is Ani DiFranco's You Had Time (sad song)
how can i go home
with nothing to say
i know you're going to look at me that way
and say what did you do out there
and what did you decide
you said you needed time
and you had time
you are a china shop
and i am a bull
you are really good food
and i am full
i guess everything is timing
i guess everything's been said
so i am coming home with an empty head
you'll say did they love you or what
i'll say they love what i do
the only one who really loves me is you
and you'll say girl did you kick some butt
and i'll say i don't really remember
but my fingers are sore
and my voice is too
you'll say it's really good to see you
you'll say i missed you horribly
you'll say let me carry that
give that to me
and you will take the heavy stuff
and you will drive the car
and i'll look out the window and make jokes
about the way things are
how can i go home
with nothing to say
i know you're going to look at me that way
and say what did you do out there
and what did you decide

Listening to The Last 5 Years (thanks to N and P for the copy ^_^)--

Happy New Year (again) to everyone ^_^ -- i love tikoy ^_^

For AdMU Alumni:
A Retreat for Holy Week based on the Spiritual Exercises
of Saint Ignatius will be held on April 7-11, 2004 at Sacred Heart Novitiate, Jesuit Retreat House and Seminar Center, Novaliches, Quezon City.
The Holy Week Triduum is a very good time to take some days off from home and work to engage God in quiet prayer and prepare for the great Easter mysteries.
This directed retreat will be a good opportunity to reflect on the past year and to see the unique ways by which God invites us to share in the Paschal Mystery in the concrete events of our lives.
A major highlight of this retreat is the rich liturgy of the Paschal Triduum which will be presided over by the Jesuit fathers of the Sacred Heart Novitiate.
For the last five years, the Center for Ignatian Spirituality Philippines has been successfully offering directed days of prayer during the most solemn Paschal Triduum.
A group of supervised retreat guides will be on hand to guide the retreatants, one on one through the days of prayer. The retreat begins at dusk of Holy Wednesday, and ends mid-day of Easter Sunday.

Compre countdown:
I have two weeks left to study for the first half of the exam. I'm doing well so far --
No use squeezing blood from stone (favorite quote from my beloved Prof. Torres) -- I know what I know and there's no improving that knowledge na -- but I hate the anticipation =P (I dread the evening of February 6 -- it would be an agonizing wait for February 7)
I just want to get this over and done with! >_<
Thank God for the "what comes after" -- so many plans, so many friends nice enough to indulge me and an afternoon at a spa! ^_^

Finally got a chance to read My Faith in Frankie -- lol! Such a great, great first issue! I wish I had my own personal god. ^_^
Today I decided that I will believe that I have a god who is looking out for me -- it is a comforting thought and all it takes is a bit of faith --
Speaking of faith --
Conversation with E:
Me: According to A, I need to take a leap of faith --
E: And?
Me: I want to leap, but I don't have faith.
E: [snorts] [shakes head] [continues drawing]

Something I want to add to my 2003 lists--
A really beautiful graphic novel called Blankets by Craig Thompson. (cried over this ^_^) I was reminded of this when I was reading Bryan O' Malley's Lost at Sea (another really good read ^_^)
The Strangest thing--
It seems PDI made a mistake and reprinted yesterday's horoscopes today (Saturday). Yes, I read my horoscope. I wonder what the "cosmic" implications are -- having to experience the same fate twice in a row --
* * *
Sunday
Watched Kill Bill at Podium with sibs and J -- kinda sad that few people watched Kill Bill (and the cinema for RotK was packed!) Was surprised to see that they didn't cut _that_ much out -- thoroughly enjoyed the experience ^_^
Go watch it if you can ^_^

Got this from an email sent by the Ateneo Alumni Office:
LEARNING LINKS, an NGO that assists street kids and at-risk children
through alternative learning opportunities and mentorship programs, has
helped reduce the number of street children along Katipunan by more than
75%. The organization is currently recruiting Ateneo alumni who are
willing to devote around three hours per week to its 2004 programs. There
will be an orientation for potential volunteers on January 31 at 9 a.m.
at the Learning Links Center. Please confirm your attendance by sending
an email to learninglinks@hotmail.com

And I'm writing again ^_^ --

Friday
A Leap of Faith --
The Osho Zen Tarot deck's image for The Fool is this harlequin walking off the edge of a mountain. This is the card that came out in A's reading of me. It's what I need to do -- close me eyes, step off and know that there will be people who will catch me.
Another very interesting change is the shift in colors and I asked A what it meant. Most of the cards that came out were all from the red suite (?) and this signified action -- (or in my case, a desire to take action ^_^)
* * *
In other news --
Compre is 3 weeks away and I don't feel ready for it =P (Oh well, no use squeezing blood from stone)

Had a really nice chat with E today --
Made me think (hahaha -- bad word ^_^) about what I want for myself this year -- and that is to not think too much; to do more and worry less.
I have a really bad case of analysis paralysis. I tend to over-analyze things to the point that I've resolved whatever it is in my head even before I've done anything. E said something that really made a lot of sense -- he said that I think I want for nothing because I'm too afraid to do anything.
He's right --
I think people think I'm very self-assured and confident (A read this during one of our Tarot sessions), but I'm really so effing scared of consequences (or perceived consequences). I have taken some steps to try to resolve this, but it's just so easy to fall back into safe, comfortable habits... ~sigh~
And then I was reading something and the question the character was asked was, "If you could be anyone in the world, who would you be?" And my answer is, me -- but a me who doesn't think or worry too much. ^_^
It's the start of a new year, I'm 26 -- things are going to change.
* * *
Still reading Einstein's Dreams and picked up a copy of Alan Lightman's Good Benito -- I told my friend A to get a copy of 31 Songs and am hoping he likes it.

Whew! --
So I turned 26. I'm not quite sure what to make of that yet. It'll probably take me the entire year to figure it out (but by then, I'll turn 27 ~sigh~)
I had a fun birthday -- pretty much predicted what was going to happen: first, a phone call from A and then a visit from F & C and from J & B... but the real thing was far, far better than what I had predicted. G also dropped by -- and she's always fun to talk to ^_^
(It was so nice to have my old friends and new friends meet each other.)
I was smiling the entire day (and, it's the day after and I'm still smiling ^_^)
thank you thank you thank you ^_^
* * *
It's also fun to know someone who shares the same birthdate as you --
My conversation with J:
J: Happy Birthday!
Me: Same to you ^_^
... ambabaw ko...
Guess how I'll be spending my Valentine's Day--
Found out today that the comprehensive exam will be on February 7 and 14 -- when I told F about this, she sent back the funniest reply: "Guess this is the reason why a lot of teachers are single..." lol!
It's after February 14 that I'm looking forward to -- (I'm already making plans. ^_^)
There's videoke with sina E and a very reluctant G (pero sasama ka ^_^) and anyone else who wants to tag along ^_^
and then there's the trip to the beach ... now to find people to drag along...
and the non-lit and theory books to be read after! (Alan Lightman is a new discovery, thanks to B) ...also curious about JM Coetzee, who won the Nobel ...(a trip to the Tomas Morato bookstores with M siguro) ...and the book that G gave me ^_^
I wonder if I'm studying enough for the compre--
I wonder if they're going to fail their only grad student in Lit who is taking the compre... (would they kaya? i'm willing to settle for a B -- which is the equivalent of almost-but-not-quite failing in grad school)
~sigh~
And today at the lib...
So I walked to AdMU to get an extension on a book that I borrowed -- it seems pala they don't give extensions if it's been borrowed over the break... I had to explain that I needed it for my compre. (Guess I looked sufficiently distressed because the guy broke their rule and gave me my extension) h'ray! ^_^
Went to the comm dept to meet someone who was giving me a copy of ChunHyang (a Korean film that stars Cho Seung-Woo from Who Are You? and The Classic) ^_^
-- I like walking around the campus ^_^

Currently reading Percy Bysshe Shelley's In Defense of Poetry -- lots of really good quotes. Will try to take note and share them here...
